Dear Friends,
I am writing to you because I would like to form a coalition on campus against Hydrofracking, and I think you may be interested. There’s a sense of urgency in this, as they could be fracking in our watershed as early as this coming spring! I hope we can spread the word, add to the chorus of voices demanding a ban of fracking in NY state, and encourage honest investment in clean energy alternatives starting right here in our community.
Some friends and I have been brainstorming and have come up with a few ideas, and I would love to meet with interested people to bring in more perspectives and figure out what actions would be best. I hope it won’t be too late to get super fired up starting next semester, with the comment period for New York — when citizens can submit comments to legislators on how they feel about it — ending on January 11th (to make a comment, go to www.frackaction.com).
So please email me back if you are interested, and I will make a collection of the emails of folks who want to be involved! Just to get started on the arduous process of choosing a time when we can all meet — how’s next Thursday the 15th, in the afternoon?
Please pass the word on to other folks who may be interested!
Best regards,
Mara
Hello all -
December crept up onto us, and as quickly as it’s come, it will fly. We hope that your final few weeks of school are as stress-free as possible, productive, and rewarding.
This week is short on featured events and opportunities, so please enjoy some content from our member groups, and the chance to get involved in some fantastic groups next semester.
Take care of yourselves!

On behalf of the Earth Institute, Columbia University, you are invited to attend the annual Environmental and Sustainable Development Programs Open House on Monday, October 24, 2011, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Rotunda of Low Library on Columbia University’s Morningside campus (116th and Broadway).
If you are interested in environmental policy, climate change or sustainability management, Columbia has many programs for you, from undergraduate to graduate programs and from certificate programs to study abroad. Come learn about the innovative degree programs like the M.S. in Sustainability Management, specifically designed to meet the growing demand for sustainability managers by training leaders to bridge the gap between the principle of sustainable management and its practice, and the MPA in Environmental Science and Policy, which combines Columbia University’s hands-on approach to teaching public policy and administration with the Earth Institute’s pioneering thinking about environmental sustainability.
You can learn about the other nearly 30 degree and non-degree offerings Columbia has related to the environment and sustainable development. This event will provide you with the opportunity to meet with representatives from each of these programs. We encourage you to spread the word about this Open House to friends and colleagues who might be interested in our academic programs.
To RSVP for this event please click Open House. For more information please contact me at ei-students@ei.columbia.edu or call (212) 854-8158. Additional information about the Earth Institute’s academic programs can also be found at www.earth.columbia.edu/education .

Kristina from the Garden Club (@CUFSP) has an important announcement about Food Day, which is coming up.
Calling all greenies and foodies alike!
We all know about Earth Day ….. but now there’s a FOOD DAY too! Food
Day 2011 will be held on Monday, October 24th. Campuses, communities,
and people nationwide will be taking part in this historical this day
to and raising awareness about the many global issues surrounding food
(food justice, hunger, environmental issues, animal rights,
nutrition/obesity, etc), and rally for a better food-future.
John Jay will be having their annual local foods meal for lunch on
10/24, from 11am-2pm. We have reserved the John Jay lounge and are
working with dining to reserve tables for green/food oriented groups
to set up some sort of display or workshop to educate about these
various issues. Graduate and Undergraduate groups are invited!!
Please email Kristina (me) at ksg2116@columbia.edu ASAP to
reserve a table for your group! If you let her know after 10/16 with a
description of your setup, there may not be another time to get the
table request through to dining – as we are doing a “walk-through” on
10/17 at 2:30pm in John Jay Lounge to go through all the different
groups’ activities. Please come to this if your table will have
anything extra special (like a cooking demo, etc), in order to make
sure that JJ can accommodate your needs/that it is ok with the
administration. This then gives us a week to fix any glitches.
Thanks!
Best,
Kristina
